It’s the wrong colour

I love my wife.

Months ago, my wife told me she wanted a dresser in the nursery that she had when she was younger, but it was going to need some work.  What that work entailed, was not apparent to me at the time, as I had never really seen said dresser or the exact state it was in.  Even after seeing the dresser, I didn’t have an understanding of what work was needed.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago, when my brother-in-law Tim and I went to pickup said dresser.  It was surprisingly light, to the point that I can actually move it around fairly easily on my own.  In the end I discovered the dresser is essentially a skeleton framework with a thin skin of plywood for aesthetics.    I proceeded to figure out what work was needed to bring the dresser back into a functional state.  It was far more than I had planned.

Fast forward to earlier this week when I discussed with my wife my choice in finished that I was going to use on the dresser, which she agreed with.  I proceeded to go along my merry way, and applied an enthusiastic layer of stain (a dark Espresso colours stain, to be exact) to all drawers and drawer fronts Wednesday evening, allowing them to dry in our garage overnight.  Thursday evening rolls around, and my wife comes into the garage to review my handiwork thus far, and sees the drawers, and comments on the fact that they are much darker than she thoughts I was talking about, and that she was thinking that I was going for more of a soft grey colour.

So yesterday, and today, I have spent a ton of time working these drawers with varying degrees of sandpaper and lacquer thinner, in an effort to remove a good amount of the stain that I had so enthusiastically applied to them only 48 hours earlier, so that I can retain the drawer fronts the softer ‘greyish’ colour that we are now trying to achieve.  I have zero hope for being able to recover the drawers, as they were made out of unfinished plywood, and simply are not going to survive what would be needed to do so.  I think I have succumbed to the disappointment that I will need to paint the drawers themselves, something that I had hoped I could avoid, as I was wanting to do this all with a nice consistent and solid stain colour.

I love my wife.
